受惠氣喘藥物進步，國內新近大型追蹤研究發現，國人氣喘病患因為急性發作衝急診或住院比率，在十年間，已從1.42%大幅下降至0.59%，不過，醫師警告，台灣絕大部分氣喘病患日常用藥服從性不佳，該用藥保養不用，等到發作才靠藥「急救」，只要一年使用急救用藥次數逾4到6次，致死性風險大增。
2017歐洲呼吸道學會年會（ERS）正在義大利米蘭舉行，台灣醫師也與會分享台灣經驗。
台北榮民總醫院胸腔部臨床呼吸生理科主任彭殿王表示，國內曾針對4495名新確診氣喘病患進行長達十年的追蹤研究，結果發現，在2000年至2010年間，因急性發作送急診或住院比率，已由1.42%降至0.59%，全歸功於長效乙二型促進劑、吸入型類固醇以及抗膽鹼支氣管擴張劑等藥物使用因素。
治療氣喘，目前以吸入型類固醇及長效乙二型支氣管擴張劑為主，如果針對使用上述兩種藥物效果不好的嚴重型氣喘患者，可再加上抗膽鹼製劑治療，彭殿王說，國外兩篇大型研究指出，可顯著改善肺功能，一年的急性發作率大幅下降。
研究及臨床也顯示，嚴重型氣喘患者合併使用吸入型抗膽鹼製劑可降低21%的嚴重氣喘急性發作，其中68%嚴重型氣喘患者可達到良好控制。
台灣氣喘族群常未正確使用治療型藥物，平常該用藥不用藥，擅自停藥，是造成急性發作的最大因素，必須依賴口服類固醇、支氣管擴張劑等救急的藥物，特別是自恃身強體壯的年輕人。
彭殿王提醒，氣喘病患只要一年內使用急救用藥次數超過4到6次，即代表頻率太高，影響所及，其發生致死性氣喘風險大增，國內氣喘患者當中，約有1到2成即屬於這類反覆發作加劇的嚴重氣喘病人。
ERS大會今年也再度確認過去的治療準則，強調對於落入症狀第4、第5級的嚴重氣喘病人，合併使用三種藥物可有效提升肺功能並減輕急性惡化風險，達到控制氣喘病情的效果。
彭殿王強調，國內每年因致死性氣喘奪命雖不到50人，但值得注意的是，風險會隨著年紀增長而飆升，如果老人家又合併心血管疾病等共病在身，一旦發作起來，比年輕人更要命，不容小覷。
